Hydraulic Oils

Hydraulics : History records that in 1650 AD Pascal discovered the fundamental law of physics which governed all Hydraulic systems, it states that "Pressure applied in a confined fluid is transmitted undiminished in all directions and acts with equal force on all equal areas at right angle to them."

Functions of Hydraulic Oils :

  1. Effective Transmission of Power
  2. Lubrication of all rubbing surfaces to reduce wear, friction
  3. removal of heat
  4. protection against rust and corrosion
  5. keeping the system clean from contamination, debris or sludge
  6. compatible with all the parts, surfaces involved

Desired Qualities of an Hydraulic Oils :

  • Excellent resistance to Oxidation.
  • Good wear protction.
  • High film strength to minimise friction and wear.
  • Good anti-corrosion properties.
  • Reduce tndency to foam.
  • Good air release properties

Different Types of Hydraulic Fluids :

        Mineral Oil Base
        - Paraffinic
        - Naphthenic

        Synthetic Fluids
        - Polyalphaolefins
        - Di-Esters
        - Polyol Esters
        - phosphate Esters

Hydraulic Fluids Requirements :

  • Proper viscosity
  • Wear Protection
  • Compatible with the metallurgy
  • Thermal and Oxidation stability
  • Protect against corrosion
  • Resist Foaming
  • Non-Compressible
  • Good Demulsibility
