Hydraulic Fluid Problems
NOTE: Troubleshooting hydraulic fluid is done by sight, feel, smell, and analysis.
The following Table presents some of the more common fluid problems.
 
Problem   Possible Causes
Dirty fluid 1) Components not properly cleaned after servicing.
  2) Improper filtering of fluid that is added to the system.
  3) Reservoir does not have a breather installed or the breather was removed.
  4) Pipe ends and/or hoses not properly covered while servicing machine.
  5) Tank baffles improper. They do not provide a settling basin for heavy materials.
  6) Inadequate filtration or filters are bypassing.
  7) Excessive component wear.
Foaming fluid 1) Fluid return line not below fluid level.
  2) Inadequate or broken baffles in reservoir.
  3) Suction side of pipe leaks.
  4) Fluid does not contain an anti foaming additive.
  5) Excessive return flow to reservoir
  6) Excessive return velocity to reservoir
  7) Pump shaft seal failed.
Excessive water in petroleum base fluid 1) Fluid level below the reservoir cooling coils.
  2) Cold water lines attached to a hot reservoir will cause condensation within the reservoir.
  3) Filler left open. Atmospheric moisture absorbed.
  4) Fluid that was added was contaminated with water.
  5) Certain geographical locations with extreme temperature differentials will have excessive condensation.
  6) Low point drains not installed or not used to remove water collected over long operating periods.
Overheating of system fluid 1) Insufficient cooling flow to heat exchanger or heat exchanger clogged.
  2) Relief valve allowing continuous flow.
  3) Excessive pump slippage.
  4) Excessive valve internal leakage.
  5) Insufficient system capacity (reservoir size too small).
  6) Insufficient reservoir baffles.
  7) Reservoir return line outlet too close to pump suction line.
  8) Pipe tubing, and/or hose inside diameter too small, causing high turbulence.
  9) Valving too small, causing high turbulence.
  10) Poor air circulation around reservoir.
  11) System relief valve set too high.
